Overview
Sometimes the stresses of daily life can be overwhelming. The Diocesan Center
for Family life provides counseling to individuals, couples and families who are
at a stage of their lives where the assistance of a licensed professional is valuable in
helping them identify and clarify issues which may be causing stress. The
purpose of counseling is to help clients learn skills or techniques that also
can be successfully used in future situations.
Clients are assessed on the basis of information provided by him/her in an
initial interview as well as observation by the counselor. Psychological tests
are not conducted in this office.
Diagnosis is based on criteria set forth in DSM-IV of the American Psychiatric
Association.
Pro-active treatment plans are individualized to the client's needs and
situation. There is an emphasis on short-term approaches using interpersonal and
cognitive behavior techniques. Treatment plans may include, but are not limited
to: 1.) goal setting; 2.) communication skills; 3.) journaling; 4.) stress
management. It is believed that the client should have a sense of control over
his/her life and should be an active participant in restoring lost equilibrium.
